Arvind Narrain is an Indian human-rights lawyer, writer and activist, and a co-founder of Bengaluru’s Alternative Law Forum. His work focuses on constitutional rights, civil liberties, minority rights, discrimination and LGBTQ+ rights. He has been involved in legal struggles around Section 377 and has authored and co-authored books including *India’s Undeclared Emergency* and *Breathing Life into the Constitution*. He is also associated with the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), working on constitutional freedoms, human rights and accountability. Arvind Narrain discusses the role and failures of India’s judiciary in protecting the Constitution, particularly what he calls an “undeclared emergency” since 2014. He argues that courts have the power to defend dissent, voting rights and minorities but have often lacked the courage to use it.
